In recent decades, there have been only a few shepherds in Spain, who went with their herds through the mountains, forests and fields of Andalusia, Catalonia and the Basque Country. This has been changing since a few years now. The old profession is becoming increasingly popular amongst young people.
They learn the craft of their ancestors far from urban centers in shepherd schools. The first of all was founded in Oñati in the Spanish Basque Country in 1997. The students in Oñati are selected and intensively supervised by school head Batis Otaegi. Shepherds like Yon Harreguy in the Aralar Mountains have gone through his training.
