Marianna and Simone A. have been a couple for 26 years. They live in a small village in Piedmont, not far from Turin, they have two daughters and lead an equally organised life. Both are self-employed and work full-time when in spring 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic a strict lockdown is imposed on the Italian population.
Distance learning takes place, which brings many parents to the limits of their capacity. Already existing gender equality problems in relationships and in the labour market are made visible and intensified by the crisis.
Marianna and Simone also have to weigh up who is more likely to be able to put their own work on hold in order to devote themselves to the teaching of their daughters. From now on, the children are constant companions of the working parents.
Part of the book Hure oder Heilige — Frau sein in Italien / Santa o sgualdrina — Essere donna in Italia, 2021
Authors — Barbara Bachmann, Franziska Gilli
Publishing house — Edition Raetia
"The way our society is structured today, it is often the women who tend to put their careers on hold in order to take care of the children."
Simone
"For me, equality means equal rights, equal duties. At home, at work, in everything."
Simone
"Recently I took over the homework supervision of our daughters. At the same time, I kept getting requests from clients and tried to do a little work on the side. It was dreadful. I felt guilty towards everyone."
Marianna
"I wondered how many would get through this time unscathed."
